The Food Justice Coalition envisions, strategizes, and organizes towards a Montgomery County where food is accessible, affordable, and our own.
Our mission is to expand policy and programming to permanently secure reduced price and free food (ranging from produce to hot meals) for lower-income households and individuals, unhoused neighbors, and all of our diverse communities in Montgomery County.
In 2025, we spent our first meeting imagining and planning for what a county without food insecurity could look like. We developed our three pillars: Affordability, accessibility, and sovereignty, which guide all our work.
In 2026, we voted to finalize our coalitional priorities:
- Prioritize children in need, AND adults with disabilities, in food assistance programs.
- Expand public education for our members and community (including at the school level) about food insecurity, food systems, and urban agriculture.
- Require space allocations for food pantry/small grocer/food. distribution/community gardens in neighborhoods across Montgomery County
- Expand programs for purchasing hot foods and farm fresh foods with public food assistance programs, and with delivery models for vulnerable communities.!
- Expand current food systems programs into culturally competent food assistance with a variety of languages, topics, and food availability.
